EXPRESSION

Dear Online Family, like many, my heart has been heavy over the tragedies in the weeks and days leading up to Juneteenth 2020. Felt confused how to celebrate' delayed "freedom" with the stinging, aftertaste of ongoing injustice. Reminded me of the vintage photos of Ancestors, dressed in Sunday Best, their faces proud, yet weathered from witnessing and enduring generations of atrocities, while courageously facing an uncertain future. I felt this duality in the photos, finding hope while mourning horrific injustices of the day. It inspired me, as a "Mourning Motivation", if you will. I created this piece, filmed June 20, 2020, Juneteenth weekend 2020 in Los Angeles, amidst the National uprising for Justice for George Floyd Tragedy, and as multiple black bodies were found dangling from trees within weeks. This performance, was one block from a front door that had a confederate flag, in one direction, and a block away from another yard that waved a "Don't tread on me" snake flag, in the other direction, and yes, in Los Angeles, California. It is one take, at dusk. Thank you for taking a moment to check it out. ((I do not own the music, ) May this Nation heal and May there be Liberty and Justice for All.
